Casting Directors & Auditions - Monisha Roy (MR)AUDITIONS APPLICATION FORM - BY SARA AVRAMOVSKA (SA)
(written by Sara Avramovska) For this task, I have personally constructed an application form for our auditions. I believe that this was essential in order to raise awareness around our school facilities and encourage individuals to audition. Furthermore, by using the application form I have constructed, my media group was able to carry out the process in a professional manner. The fast that individual applied to audition for our film is brilliant of course, and this furthermore allows us to allow the performers to prepare their auditioning lines/dialogue by handing them the script a week before the audition. These casting processes are commonly video taped therefore that is what we aim to do also, therefore we can watch them back and consider the talent of an individual as well as the chemistry of the combination. Myself (SA) nd Monisha were the casting directs and casting associates of these auditions.
(By SA) For this task, myself along with my group members Monisha Roy (MR) and Ella Ponting (EP) have discussed all of the different individuals we would like to audition for our short film. Most of the people are ether teachers, school friends or friends in general. We all believed casting individuals we already know was the best idea, as from the start of our initial ideas for our short Psychological Thriller film, we have imagined our characters to be possibly played by the people as the list below:
- Protagonist Sleeping Paralysis Victim : Andrea Pinedo ,Lily O'Brian and Marwa and Melissa Sebata.
- Sleeping Paralysis Demons: Luis Ribeiro,Nelvin Kiratu and our group member Monisha Roy.
- Counsellor: Han-Sun, Adam Budd ,Iona Fabian, Helen Beech and Simon Baylis.
AUDITIONS SETUP - BY SARA AVRAMOVSKA (SA) AND MONISHA ROY (MR)
For this task, myself (SA) and Monisha Roy have constructed the set up for our auditions. We believe this is important prior to a number of reasons including:
(by SA) filming camera placement:
(by MR) lighting equipment: we used lighting equipment during the auditions in order to have better quality video for the auditions. and also to have an idea on how to use lighting in videos so we'll have some practice before we start filming our short filming.
For our filming camera placement, originally we had decided to use two cameras of which one will be focused mainly on the character auditioning while the other would have been focused on ourselves auditioning that specific character. However our original plan did not work as one of the cameras was not available (other members/groups within our class were using the other filming camera). So, instead we have taken pictures which can be found on the
diary entry page. (Link Below)
(by SA) X Mark:
We have also decided to simply draw an ''X'' onto A4 paper in order to indicate where the auditioning characters need to be positioned therefore they will be within the camera frame throughout the auditions. I believe this was somewhat essential as it avoided possible confusion of auditioning character which evidently helped with time management. we were able to audition 3 characters within an hour.

DEMONS - By Sara Avramovska
Speaking on behalf of my group, we have decided not to audition the demon characters within out film and this was due to the fact that they consisted of no dialogue. instead however we have decided to research into demon's makeup and props we may need using websites such as YouTube.

COUNSELLOR - Research Conducted by Sara Avramovska (SA)
What is counselling ? What is a counsellor's job?
For this task, I have decided to research more into what counselling psychology is and more importantly what a counsellor's job is. I believe this task I have set myself is especially essential in regards to our short film, as we contemplate, if nor obligate to portray and convey our counsellor character in certain ways. I have used carious of different websites to conduct my research such as the NHS website, Wikipedia etc. as listed below.
DEFINITION
Counselling Google Definition: ''the provision of professional assistance and guidance in resolving personal or psychological problems.'' Counselling is generally a type of talking therapy, usually one on one experience, where the patient is enabled to speak out, express their internal emotions and issues/problems they may be facing within their personal life in a confidential and dependable environment with the presence of a well trained, professional counsellor. A counsellor's job is to gain empathy by listening, putting them selfs inside the shoes of the patient, therefore any negative thoughts or feelings the patient may be experiencing can be easily be dealt with.
BRIEF HISTORY COUNSELLING
I have set this task to myself simply out of pure, personal interest and I also believed that there is a chance it may contribute within the portrayal of our character.
Humans have found comfort by sharing their stories, their problems with others. As the old saying suggests ''a problem shared is a problem healed'' Suggesting that a part of the healing process, sometimes can not be faced alone as it can destroy you from the inside out; by sharing your human internal emotions through interacting with others who genuinely care, who will listen to you and possibly advise you as to what approach you should take in order to deal with your personal issues. This process suggest that counselling possibly existed from the tribal era where a group of people would gather together and share their stories and personal experience. This furthermore developed a civilisation where religion offered a type of counselling that still goes on within today's era. (usually done my priests).
Moreover, in the 1890's, Sigmund Freud, born on the 6th of May 1856 - 23 September 1939 was and well still is the father of psychopathology. As the father of psychoanalysis which is a term used to display Freud's clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue, interaction between a patient and the psychoanalyst, in other words the counsellor.
WHAT IS COUNSELLING USED FOR?
Counselling can be used to treat various of different health and mental conditions including:
- Anxiety and depression.
- Post Dramatic Stress Disorder.
- Drug misuse.
- Eating disorders with examples including anorexia and bulimia.
- Long term illnesses such as cancer or lupus.
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
- Borderline Personality Disorder.
- Phobias.
- Panic disorders.
- Psychotic symptoms (reality and preception)
- Bipolar Disorder.
- Sleep Paralysis - our topic.
More on counselling topics on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_counseling_topics
Counselling is also exceptionally helpful for relationship breakdowns such as marital breakdowns, work-related stress, it explore issues such as sexual identity etc. which are all remarkably crucial in regards to establishing a confident human being who can understand himself or herself better therefore preventing depression (sadness), anxiety and the individuals perspective of life itself.
''Counselling can happen though face to face interactions, within a group, over the phone, by email or by using a specialised computer program.'' - NHS.

Ella Ponting (EP)
A counsellor stereotypically would wear very business professional looking clothing to reflect the serious nature of their job. Most often counsellors are assumed to be women - possibly due to the stereotype that women are more emotional and open than men. To beat this stereotype we decided to audition both men and women for this role to see their different approaches to the demeanour of a counsellor. Counsellors also are depicted as wearing very bland monochromatic colours, again possibly to depict a serious, solemn appearance but also possibly to focus the attention more towards the person being counselled. Counsellors also are frequently shown to wear glasses. People who wear glasses are typically viewed as being wise and studious - the counsellor may be wearing glasses to indicate to the person being counselled that they are knowledgable and helping to sustain rapport between him/herself and their patients. Whilst we don't want to portray the counsellor in a stereotypical way, we would need to include a clothing attire that is indicative of their role. We would most likely have the counsellor wearing reasonably smart clothing , possible with a jumper or more casual shoes to make sure that the counsellor looks less like a business-person and more like someone who would be deemed approachable and someone you would feel comfortable opening up to.PROTAGONIST/ VICTIM OF SLEEP PARALYSIS CLOTHING ATTIRE - Sara Avramovska (SA)
Protagonist from saraavrsaraavramovskaaaa
In order to collaborate effectively as a group, we have all contributed to these tasks. Below is Ella Pontings (EP) contribution to my chosen attire for our protagonist:
2. Pills and Pillbox (EP)
The protagonist's antidepressants, to be placed in a pillbox. The name of the drug will be concealed to add to the ambiguity and mystery surrounding the protagonist. This prop will be provided by myself
3. (EP) Other possible props may include demon staffs and weapons
We are unsure whether to use these as the dark hooded costume may be enough for the costume as we don't want to overdo the costume as to avoid it appearing fake or having the opposite of the desired effect.
4. Toothbrush (EP)
Used as our protagonist is getting ready for bed, reflecting her daily routine.

- TRIAL AND ERA: White Ripped up T-Shirt - (By Sara Avramovska)
Original White T-Shirt Displayed at the left hand corner
I have personally bought the White T-Shirt from Primark alongside with Monisha Roy (MR) only for £2.50. Myself and Monisha Roy (MR) have chosen to select an XL T- Shirt as my personal demon, Joelina Baylon, is originally a Small Size in T-Shirts therefore the white tp will appear as a baggy dress to achieve a childish outcome.
Originally our group decided to use dark/black clothing for our demons scenes however I personally believed that since the Demon/Sleep Paralysis Scenes will be taking place in a dark mise-en-scene with very limited lighting, a white T-shirt would contrast effectively against the dark backgrounds within the camera frame while also representing both good (Hayle, the young teenager) and evil (the Demons) in our film. The color black is stereo-typically associated/ connoted with evil, mystery, death and danger while the color white connotes purity, innocence, goodness, perfection and cleanliness. As the demons within our psychological thriller are represented as evil, I believe the white clothing attire will make our scenes more alarming not only due to the contrast provided within the frame, but also due to the breaking of stereo-typical color connotations. Furthermore, I can use the fake blood I have created previously to create blood stains on the baggy top (size:XL) which will also stand out more effectively on white rather then a black clothing attire achieving an increasingly alarming and sinister outcome.

In order to collaborate effectively as a group, we have all contributed to these tasks. Below is Ella Pontings (EP) contribution to my chosen attire for our protagonist:
Ella Ponting (EP)
Our protagonist will be dressed in winter clothing - as this is the time when we will be filming. The protagonist would wear an attire similar to the clothing shown above: a warm fashionable jumper, trousers, brown boots and a small amount of jewellery and makeup. We wanted our protagonist to look similar to how a lot of young people to dress top reflect how anyone can be affected by mental health issues and how someone's outward appearance isn't necessarily indicative of what they are experiencing mentally. Often in psychological thrillers, the protagonist will be dressed in unusual clothing to reflect their instability or often the character's bizarre clothing may offer a reason behind their psychological problems. To avoid this stereotype we wanted to create a seemingly normal outward appearance to indicate that there is more than what meets the eye. The character is also wearing clothing that a 'typical teenage girl' may wear to make our film more relatable to our audience and for young people to establish a connection between themselves and the girl experiencing sleep paralysis - especially those with a mental health condition.SLEEPING PARALYSIS DEMONS - (EP)
Ella Ponting (EP)
Our demons will be wearing black coloured clothing to reflect the dark undertones of our film. Black resembles a colour associated with death, evil, mystery, fear and the unknown linking to some of the key themes of our film. Our two demons will be dressed in long dark robes concealing their bodies and a mask to shield their face, this adds to the sense of mystery and ambiguity surrounding our protagonist's outcome and adding to the anonymity of these characters. The red mask and staff provide a stark contrast to the dark coloured clothing and draws attention to these features, adding to the eerie effect of the costume. This costume design illuminates a similar attire that people incorporate on halloween, a tradition where people are encouraged to dress up in scary costumes and in return expect people to give them sweets. This is similar to the demons in our production, where the demons seemingly want something from our protagonist. The dark coloured clothing will be partially camouflaged due to our dark night time setting in the protagonist's room making the demons appearance even more unsettling and unexpected.

1. Fake Blood - By Sara Avramovska (SA)
For this task, I have personally researched ''Fake Blood Recipes'' and found that most of them contained ingredients such as Red Food coloring, Corn Flour, Water and Coco/ Chocolate Powder
For this task, I have personally taken the responibility to buy all the ingrediants needed in order to create fake blood.
1. I begun by simply finding a plastic container and a spoon that I can mix all my ingredients in and with as well as store the fake blood, avoiding any spillage, change in colour as well as the consistency of it.

Make-up (Ella Ponting, EP) DEMONS
After searching through different demon/Halloween related costumes on the website: https://uk.pinterest.com/ I composed of several images that would be the style of make-up we would wish to incorporate into our film. As a group we decided that we wanted to include the demons wearing peculiarly coloured contacts to draw the audience's attention to their faces, since they will be wearing dark clothing. The bloodshot red coloured contacts would be preferable for one of the demons (perhaps even both) as this colour is especially striking and would match the fake blood also used in the scene. However after looking at different sites selling coloured contact lenses there were other interesting combinations such as white, evoking an unusual otherworldly spiritual appeal. We would also have the demon's faces possibly painted white, unless we decide it would look more scary and intimidating for the characters to be wearing masks. Another possibility is created the appearance of sunken looking eyes with shadows looming underneath them by using a combination of eye-liner and eye-shadow.

I have decided to also participate within our Psychological Thriller as the character of a demon due to the fact that none of the applicants for this part were able to film/ participate during the weekend timeframe we had originally set, however I believe that because I am a group member and apart of this project, I was able to direct and effectively undertake a variety of different ideas in regards to the storyboard (camera angles, movements, lighting and makeup.)
My Personal Character Profile. Audition form:
Make-up I have done personally - Sara Avramovska (SA)
I have done my demon character's makeup myself using the props provided by myself , Ella Ponting (EP) and Monisha Roy (MR) however I have applied my white contact lenses first therefore I can avoid getting any possible eye infections as well avoiding the watery eyes which could have potentially ruined my makeup. However, since I have never worn contact lenses previously, I have used the website and screenshots below for guidance for myself and the other demon characters:
Moreover here are the steps that I took to do my makeup :
1. Using my finger tips and a blending sponge, I begun by simply applying White Face Paint/ White Foundation (which was the prop provided by EP) to evenly cover my entire portrait as well as blending down my neck in order to conceal any human flesh and avoid harsh lines achieving an effective outcome in terms of professional even and even skin-tone application.
2. Using Baby Powder and a big kabuki brush, I have covered my entire face with a light layer to again, even out the white flesh skin-tone while also achieving a matt look. I also believe that the baby powder has immensely helped with achieving a while, pale and almost ill looking face necessary for the portrayal of a demon.
3. I have filled in my brows by using a Black Eye-Liner Pencil provided by Monisha Roy (MR). I have decided to use an eyeliner pencil as the courage is fuller and helps to create a desired shape. I simply lightly outlined my natural brow shape which then I filled in for an intensified definition along with a one to two coats of black mascara applied to darken my brows for a bolder appearance. Using a White Eyeliner pencil and a highlighter I have defined my brow bone in order to enhance my facial contour.
4. By using red/ burgandy matt eyeshadow and a blending brush, I was able to achieve unereyes of my demonic creature.
5. I haves used white eye liner for my lower water-line in order to make my eyes appear larger. This I believe will contribute to the appearance of the contact lenses on camera.
6.. Black Eye-shadow was used to con our
7. I have used a black pencil eye liner in order to draw the gains on my face.
7. Black Eye Liner Pencil for veins .
